Youth in Natural Resources (YNR) Apprentices gain navigation skills through GMSTCI’s GPS Scavenger Hunt

On July 10, 2025, the Guyana Mining School and Training Centre Inc. (GMSTCI) hosted an engaging Map Reading and Navigation (GPS) – Scavenger Hunt for 13 participants (7 females and 6 males) from the Youths in Natural Resources (YNR) Apprenticeship Programme. The one-day training, facilitated by Instructors Garvin Douglas and Pretima Lall, along with Intern Daniel Kansinally, combined classroom learning with an exciting outdoor practical at the National Park.

Participants were introduced to key topics including map and scale interpretation, coordinate systems (UTM), and GPS operation, before testing their skills in a competitive scavenger hunt designed to simulate real-world field navigation challenges. The exercise encouraged teamwork, spatial reasoning, and critical thinking, while demonstrating the importance of accurate navigation in natural resource exploration and environmental management.

Hands-on activities like this help participants move beyond theory and build confidence using tools that are essential in modern fieldwork and exploration.

Through initiatives like this, GMSTCI continues to build the capacity of Guyana’s youth, fostering technical competence and environmental awareness that support the nation’s sustainable development goals.

  1. Hello there! I know this is kind of off topic but I was
wondering which blog platform are you using for this website?
I’m getting sick and tired of WordPress because I’ve had problems with hackers and
I’m looking at alternatives for another platform. I would be awesome if you could point me in the direction of
    a good platform.

  2. Can I simply say what a relief to discover somebody that truly knows what they are discussing on the web.
You actually know how to bring an issue to light and make it important.

More and more people should look at this and understand this side of your story.
I was surprised you are not more popular
given that you surely have the gift.

  3. This hands-on approach to teaching map reading, UTM coordinates, and GPS operation at the National Park sounds like an effective way to build practical field skills. Combining classroom instruction with a competitive scavenger hunt gives participants a chance to apply what they learn in a realistic setting, which is valuable for natural resource exploration and environmental management.

  4. This kind of hands-on GPS and map-reading training seems far more effective than classroom theory alone, especially when participants get to apply coordinate systems and navigation skills in a competitive outdoor setting. The mix of classroom instruction and a scavenger hunt at the National Park sounds like a smart way to build both technical confidence and teamwork.
