Youth in Natural Resources (YNR) Apprentices gain navigation skills through GMSTCI’s GPS Scavenger Hunt
On July 10, 2025, the Guyana Mining School and Training Centre Inc. (GMSTCI) hosted an engaging Map Reading and Navigation (GPS) – Scavenger Hunt for 13 participants (7 females and 6 males) from the Youths in Natural Resources (YNR) Apprenticeship Programme. The one-day training, facilitated by Instructors Garvin Douglas and Pretima Lall, along with Intern Daniel Kansinally, combined classroom learning with an exciting outdoor practical at the National Park.
Participants were introduced to key topics including map and scale interpretation, coordinate systems (UTM), and GPS operation, before testing their skills in a competitive scavenger hunt designed to simulate real-world field navigation challenges. The exercise encouraged teamwork, spatial reasoning, and critical thinking, while demonstrating the importance of accurate navigation in natural resource exploration and environmental management.
Hands-on activities like this help participants move beyond theory and build confidence using tools that are essential in modern fieldwork and exploration.
Through initiatives like this, GMSTCI continues to build the capacity of Guyana’s youth, fostering technical competence and environmental awareness that support the nation’s sustainable development goals.
