Building Capacity for a Greener Future: GMSTCI Hosts Responsible Mining Workshop in Santa Rosa

From July 30 to August 4, 2025, the Guyana Mining School and Training Centre Inc. (GMSTCI) conducted a five-day Responsible Mining Workshop in Santa Rosa, Northwest Mining District #1. The training brought together six miners (four females and two males) from surrounding communities, including Kokerite and Kariako, reflecting the growing participation of women in Guyana’s extractive sector.

Led by Instructors Garvin Douglas and Pretima Lall, the workshop covered key topics such as Mining Regulations, Occupational Safety and Health (OSH) at placer mine sites, Map Reading and GPS Navigation, and Small-Scale Prospecting Techniques. Each session blended classroom instruction with hands-on demonstrations, giving participants practical exposure to techniques that improve safety, efficiency, and compliance in their daily operations.

The training aimed to build local technical capacity while reinforcing the principles of safe, legal, and environmentally responsible mining. By promoting best practices aligned with Guyana’s Low Carbon Development Strategy (LCDS), GMSTCI continues to support national efforts toward sustainable resource development in hinterland regions.

Participants expressed appreciation for the interactive approach and emphasized how the lessons learned would directly enhance their mining practices and community safety.

GMSTCI remains committed to working closely with miners across Guyana to strengthen technical skills, reduce environmental impacts, and improve livelihoods through continuous training and education.
