Empowering Community Rangers for Responsible Mining in Baramita
Empowering Community Rangers for Responsible Mining in Baramita
From June 4–14, 2025, the Baramita Multi-Purpose Centre in the Northwest Mining District #4 became the training ground for ten new Community Mines Rangers during a comprehensive ten-day Community Mines Ranger Training (CMRT) hosted by the Guyana Mining School and Training Centre Inc. (GMSTCI). Led by Instructors Tracy Lall and Omella James, the programme equipped participants, four women and six men, with the tools and knowledge needed to monitor mining activities responsibly within their Indigenous communities.
Through hands-on sessions and interactive workshops, Rangers learned essential skills in GPS navigation, map reading, site inspection and reporting, occupational safety and health (OSH), environmental protection, emergency response, and mining regulation compliance. These areas form the backbone of responsible mining, ensuring that Indigenous lands are both economically productive and environmentally protected.
This training empowers Rangers to act as the first line of defense for sustainable resource management. The GMSTCI continues to play a pivotal role in promoting safe, sustainable, and inclusive mining practices through capacity-building initiatives like the CMRT. By extending technical education to remote regions such as Baramita, the school reinforces its mission to develop a skilled workforce that safeguards Guyana’s mineral resources for future generations.
