As part of the national observance of Occupational Safety and Health (OSH) Month 2025, the Guyana Mining School and Training Centre Inc. (GMSTCI) joined forces with key partners to conduct a targeted OSH outreach across several mining camps in the Puruni area, Mining District #3. The outreach aimed to strengthen miners’ awareness of safe mining practices, workplace health, and environmental responsibility.
The field team, comprising Nathan Indarsingh, Instructor I at GMSTCI; Stokely Roberts, Safety Officer from the Environmental Division of the GGMC; Naipaul Persaud, Safety Officer from the Ministry of Labour; and Kemal Kissoon, Entomology Technician from the Ministry of Health, visited 15 mining operations, reaching 136 miners at locations including Rock Creek, Brazilian Scheme, Wrong Turn, Ms. June Mine, and Peters Mine.
Throughout the activity, miners engaged in interactive discussions on best practices for safe and efficient mining, while the team conducted on-site inspections to identify safety gaps and areas for improvement. Educational posters, booklets, and other visual materials were distributed to reinforce safety messages. The Ministry of Health complemented these efforts by providing malaria testing and treated mosquito nets, ensuring that health remained a central part of the safety agenda.
This outreach exemplifies how inter-agency collaboration can bring meaningful change to the mining sector, empowering workers through education, inspection, and health support.
