From February 9 to 17, 2025, the Guyana Mining School and Training Centre Inc. (GMSTCI) conducted an 8-day Community Mines Ranger Training (CMRT) in the Kamarang/Warawatta Community, located in Region 7 (Cuyuni-Mazaruni). The training was facilitated by Mr. Nathan Indarsingh (Instructor I) and Ms. Cindy Evans (Instructor I), with assistance from Mr. Daniel Kansinally (Assistant Instructor). A total of 21 participants, comprising 8 males and 13 females, took part in the program aimed at enhancing the technical and regulatory capacity of local Rangers.
The CMRT forms a key part of GMSTCI’s ongoing mission to build local capacity and promote responsible mining within hinterland and indigenous communities. Over the course of the training, participants were introduced to three essential modules: Map Reading and Navigation (GPS), Occupational Safety and Health (OSH), and Mining Regulations. These sessions equipped participants with both theoretical and practical knowledge, empowering them to assist the Guyana Geology and Mines Commission (GGMC) in monitoring mining operations, ensuring compliance, and fostering sustainable management of mineral resources.
Through the CMRT initiative, GMSTCI continues to advance its national mandate to strengthen community oversight and environmental stewardship in Guyana’s extractive sector. The program’s success in Kamarang/Warawatta demonstrates the School’s continued commitment to empowering Amerindian communities with the tools and technical understanding needed to manage their lands effectively and sustainably.
