Building Capacity in the Northwest: GMSTCI Empowers New Batch of Community Mine Rangers in Mabaruma
From April 4–14, 2025, the Guyana Mining School and Training Centre Inc. (GMSTCI) conducted a 9-day Community Mines Ranger Training at the NAREI Office in Mabaruma, located in the Northwest Mining District #4. The training was led by Instructors Garvin Douglas (Instructor II) and Pretima Lall (Instructor I) and brought together 15 participants (4 females, 11 males) from surrounding communities eager to strengthen their capacity for responsible mining governance.
The program focused on Map Reading and Navigation (GPS), Occupational Safety and Health (OSH), and Mining Regulations , Â three foundational areas essential for effective field monitoring, compliance, and safety management in the small- and medium-scale mining sector.
Participants gained hands-on experience in GPS navigation, hazard identification, and regulatory procedures, all tailored to the local context of Guyana’s hinterland mining communities. The training empowers residents with these practical skills that enables communities to take a proactive role in ensuring mining is done safely, responsibly, and within the law.
The training aligns with GMSTCI’s ongoing mission to build national capacity within Guyana’s extractive industries, strengthening the link between community stewardship and sustainable resource management. Participants are now better equipped to support compliance efforts and promote safer working environments in their respective regions.
GMSTCI remains committed to expanding its outreach to mining districts across Guyana, ensuring that every community benefits from the knowledge, technology, and best practices needed for a modern, sustainable mining future.
