Building Skills for a Greener Future: GMSTCI Conducts Responsible Mining Workshop in Mahdia

From March 17–21, 2025, the Guyana Mining School and Training Centre Inc. (GMSTCI) held a five-day Responsible Mining Workshop at the Campbelltown Benab, Mahdia, within Potaro Mining District #2. The training, facilitated by Instructors Garvin Douglas and Tracy Lall, brought together 33 participants, including 24 women and 9 men, reflecting the growing participation of women in Guyana’s extractive industries.

The workshop focused on equipping miners with essential knowledge and practical skills in Mining Regulations, Occupational Safety and Health (OSH), Map Reading and GPS Navigation, and Small-Scale Prospecting Techniques. Through interactive sessions and field demonstrations, participants explored ways to improve operational safety, legal compliance, and environmental stewardship within their mining activities.

The initiative aims to empower miners to operate responsibly and efficiently while contributing to Guyana’s sustainable development goals. The workshop forms part of the Government of Guyana’s wider efforts under the Low Carbon Development Strategy (LCDS) to strengthen local capacity and promote environmentally sound practices across mining communities.

The training concluded with strong community engagement and renewed commitment from participants to apply the lessons learned in their daily operations, ensuring that mining remains both productive and sustainable.
